The Filoli Estate, in Woodside, California, had several formal gardens and a tour of the house, all of which is being preserved by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

It was only after I situated the aqua garden just so with irises, water lilies and stones that a frog came by.      Introducing Maurice, 2016summergarden43the star of the garden this summer. He is a bronze frog, green face and bronze body, very contemplative and still around even though it’s getting colder at night.

There was a mini Maurice as well, in the smaller pond.

2016summergarden56

who disappeared a few weeks ago after being visited by big Maurice. Hummm…Hope he’s hibernating.

The Pickerel Frog who has a nice flashy coat

2016summergarden55

is in front of the house. She seems to love this blue pot filled with water and Elephant Ears. It’s situated right under the porch light where moths gather. I’m guessing this frog is a “she” because smaller versions of herself were nearby for a while, until they ventured off to who knows where.

Stayed tuned for Part 2, In a small corner of the world, there is a garden, Summer 2016.

That’s right, more frogs, flowers and bees.

This Spring, I let the garden go to weeds, sorry, I mean pioneer plants and planted a few new flowers here and there. As usual, the milkweed brought lots of bumble bees, honey bees and butterflies. Stay tuned for ‘In a small corner of the world, there is a garden, Summer 2016.’

2014fallsunset2

A really good year for fall colors, they seemed to last for a long time too. The skies were mostly clear, bringing out the vivid reds and oranges in the leaves. The cosmos that I planted in the spring had thick, bright green foliage for what seemed forever and then when September rolled around, it started to bloom. The plant is still blooming now and we’re having some very cold nights. I did take a lot of pictures of the hydrangea Little Lamb because it kept getting more and more saturated in pink hues. There was one evening, as the sun was setting, the sky lit up the same color as the hydrangea flowers. It was pink, pink and more pink.

                                                                                                                 Dust of Snow
                                                                                                              by Robert Frost
                                                                                                             The way a crow
                                                                                                          Shook down on me
                                                                                                            The dust of snow
                                                                                                        From a hemlock tree
                                                                                                        Has given my heart
                                                                                                         A change of mood
                                                                                                      And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.
