The snow lantern or snölykta was made the day after a storm which left us about five inches of wet snow. The next day,  being sunny and in the upper thirties, was perfect for making snowballs.

The first night was a little too windy so the candles kept going out. The following day  I placed two tall candles in the igloo and lit them in the evening just as the sun was going down and it stayed alight well into the early morning hours.

How to make a snölykta

New Hampshire in the winter after a snow storm. Heavy wet snow and an overcast sky make for a chilly, contrasting image.

This snow sticks to everything it touches, making space appear more ‘closed in’ and the air so very quiet, kind of like what fog does.

We got creamed this year.  They said it was one out of three worst snow storms New Hampshire has ever had. Nearly 170,000 without electricity. Happy Thanksgiving!

You know what all this snow means? That’s right! Sledding!

The few evenings ago, Michael said you have to see this, so I got the camera and he suggested a panoramic shot.

After he pasted it together, we get the full effect.

I think my mother took this photograph (above) several years ago when she and my father came to visit.

This the only one I’ve doctored with saturation, to bring out that rainbow. It turned the sky into neon lavender.

                                                                                                                 Dust of Snow
                                                                                                              by Robert Frost
                                                                                                             The way a crow
                                                                                                          Shook down on me
                                                                                                            The dust of snow
                                                                                                        From a hemlock tree
                                                                                                        Has given my heart
                                                                                                         A change of mood
                                                                                                      And saved some part
Of a day I had rued.
